Falk School Library Book Lists
  • Award Books
    • Newbery Award Winners & Honor Book List:
The prestigious Newbery Medal is awarded to a U.S. author for the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children in the preceding year. The award is named after John Newbery, the famous 18th century British publisher and bookseller. The Newbery Medal was first awarded in 1922 and is given each year by the Association of Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association.

    • Carnegie Medal Book List: The Library Association established the Carnegie Medal in 1936. This annual award recognizes an outstanding book for children written in English and published in the United Kingdom during the preceding year. Beginning in 2007, the award year refers to when the award was granted, and not to the year in which the book was published. The medal is now awarded by CILIP: the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals, established in 2002.
    • Coretta Scott King Award and the John Steptoe Award Winners:
The Coretta Scott King Award and the John Steptoe Award for New Talent are given to African-American authors and illustrators for outstanding contributions to children's and young adult literature. The awards are granted for titles that promote appreciation of the contribution of all people to the realization of the American Dream, to peace, and to world brotherhood. First presented in 1970 by the American Library Association's Social Responsibilities Round Table, the Coretta Scott King Award has included separate categories for authors and illustrators since 1979. In addition to the annual winners for Author and Illustrator, several books are selected each year as Honor Books. The John Steptoe Award for New Talent was first granted in 1995, but may not be granted in a particular year if the awarding committee so decides.
    • Sydney Taylor Book Award for Older Readers:
Designed to recognize the best in Jewish children's literature, the Association of Jewish Libraries annually grants the Sydney Taylor Book Awards to notable children's titles authentically portraying the Jewish experience. The award is a memorial to noted author Sydney Taylor, author of the All-of-a-Kind Family series of children's stories centered on a New York Jewish family. Previously awarded to only one title, two award categories were created (Younger Readers and Older Readers) in 1981. In 2007, the Association of Jewish Libraries Teen Book Award category was added, and the dating system was changed to coordinate with the year in which the award is presented.
    • Schneider Family Award, Middle School Book List:
The Schneider Family Book Awards are presented annually to titles that convey artistic expressions of disability experiences, and are written for juvenile audiences. The award is granted by the American Library Association (ALA) annually in three categories: Young Children (ages 0-10), Middle School (ages 11-13), and Teen (ages 13-18).
    • Michael L. Printz Award Book List
The American Library Association's (ALA) Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) established the Michael L. Printz Award in 2000 to recognize literary excellence in young adult literature. Each year, one title is granted the Printz Award, and up to four honor books are recognized. The award is named for a Topeka, Kansas school librarian who was a long-time active member of YALSA. Books from any genre are eligible for the award.
    • Phoenix Award Book List
The Phoenix Award, established in 1985 by the Children's Literature Assocation, honors the most outstanding book published in English twenty years ago which did not receive a major award (such as the Newbery or Caldecott) at the time of its publication.
    • Pura Belpre Award Book List
The Pura Belpre Award was established in 1996 by the joint efforts of the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) and the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish speaking, an affiliate of the American Library Association. The award is named in honor of Pura Belpre, the first Latina librarian at the New York Public Library.
    • National Book Award for Young People's Literature
The National Book Awards were established in 1950 to recognize American literary works of exceptional merit. In 1996, the National Book Foundation established the Young People's Literature category. All books written for children or young adults by United States writers are eligible for this award. The winners for fiction (as well as other categories) are selected by independent judging panels.
