outstanding book for children written in English and published in the
United Kingdom during the preceding year. Beginning in 2007, the award
year refers to when the award was granted, and not to the year in which

Coretta Scott King Award and the
John
Steptoe Award Winners:
The Coretta Scott King Award and the John Steptoe Award for New Talent are
given to African-American authors and illustrators for outstanding
contributions to children's and young adult literature. The awards are
granted for titles that promote appreciation of the contribution of all
people to the realization of the American Dream, to peace, and to world
brotherhood. First presented in 1970 by the American Library Association's
Social Responsibilities Round Table, the Coretta Scott King Award has
included separate categories for authors and illustrators since 1979. In
addition to the annual winners for Author and Illustrator, several books
are selected each year as Honor Books. The John Steptoe Award for New
Talent was first granted in 1995, but may not be granted in a particular
year if the awarding committee so decides.

Sydney Taylor Book Award for Older Readers:
Designed to recognize the best in Jewish children's

centered on a New York Jewish family. Previously awarded to only one
title, two award categories were created (Younger Readers and Older
Readers) in 1981. In 2007, the Association of Jewish Libraries Teen Book
Award category was added, and the dating system was changed to coordinate
with the year in which the award is presented.
-
